40 New Education Blogs Recommended By Teachers

This is part of a series of ‘Best of 2011‘ posts where we share some of the best education-related materials of the past year. Be sure to check back on a regular basis as we’ve got some pretty exciting stuff coming soon!

It’s super easy to start your own blog. That’s a good thing. (Check out our ultimate guide to using WordPress for tips!) It means teachers with little time (isn’t that every teacher?!) or technical know-how can actually have a stellar blog. Since the technical part of blog creation is so easy, teachers can focus on content. Lucky for us, there were a ton of amazing new education blogs created in 2011.

From blogs about education technology to ones answering questions from parents… there are lots to add to your preferred RSS reader. Each of these blogs was nominated for an Edublogs award for being the best new blog of the year. In the meantime, start working your way through this epic list of content creators!

I have taught English in Hungary, trained teachers in the Middle East, worked for a publishing company in the UK. I lived in Iraqi Kurdistan for 9 fantastic months. Worked at one of the most exciting airlines in the world in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I taught in a secondary school and mentored a brilliant group of fantastic English teachers in Sharjah, UAE. In 2010 I came back to Hungary with my wonderful wife and my 4-month-old daughter. Since then we have lived in a small town in 34 kms from Budapest.

    Teachers often heave a sigh of relief when they take their students out to recess. Finally! The children can burn off the pent up energy they had been accruing for the past few hours indoors. But what if we change our outlook on outdoor play time? What if we create an outdoor environment that offered all of the learning opportunities that one would typically find indoors? What if children could run out to a well-planned play yard to find experiences in math, science, nature, dramatic play, water, building and construction, sensory activities, physical development, art and music? What if they play yard developed critical thinking, discovery, problem solving, and cooperative skills? The result would be that we wouldn’t have “just recess” anymore. We would have The Outdoor Classroom!

    Hi! My name is Tia Henriksen. I am an elementary administrator in Surrey, BC. I began my teaching career in 1995 when I graduated university with a Bachelor’s Degree. In the year 2000, I started my Master’s Degree in Education specializing in Diagnostic Instruction and Remediation (completing this degree in 2002). After teaching for approximately 10 years, I was hired as an elementary school vice-principal just after my first child was born 6 years ago. Since then, I have worked in three diverse elementary schools as the vice-principal. In addition, I have had the pleasure of adding two more children to our family. I love the difference I can make at the schools in which I work. It is amazing to see the growth of the students, their parents, the teachers and the support staff. It has been a great experience witnessing my own growth as well. I truly believe in being a life-long learner. I’m always looking for something new to learn about or try (like this blog). Without learning, life would not be as nearly as rewarding or invigorating as it is now.

    I’m Stephanie. As the name of this blog suggests, I’m studying to become a teacher. I’m currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching via distance at a New Zealand university.
